About

Jacob Cynamon-Murphy has made his way out of hiding, returning to the Blogosphere after contributing such titles as The Design-Time Developer (2003-2006) and Corporate Real Estate (2006-2008).  On his latest blog, General Specialist, Jacob will be sharing with readers his work and life experiences.  Additionally, you may find him commenting at length on how products and services could stand to improve, since he is a bit of an opinionated bastard.

What’s in a title: Jacob and his friend Brian were discussing the current job market and their relative statuses in said market.  Each agreed that it seems that employers are increasingly seeking highly specialized employees for extremely tightly defined roles.  In contrast, both Jacob and Brian are experienced in a variety of business and technical areas, across a number of industries.  Where everyone is seeking specialists, we find ourselves to be solidly skilled generalists.  Upon lamenting that there appeared to be no such thing as a generalist outside of HR – and neither of us had a clue about what makes an HR Generalist – we self-titled as “general specialists.”  Being the one of the two of us with a new blog, Jacob figured it was an apt title for his new online adventure.

    Jacob,

Of course you must have seen “Julia and Me”. If there’s a cookbook for job searchers you could try each recipe every day… This blog shows your spirit, Jacob, and you have so many good ideas. I will tell people to check it out. Also congrats on your marriage!

Mark, it’s nice to hear from you. I am familiar with “Julia and Me”; I guess this is a lot like that. Thank you for the kind words. I hope all is well with you – I’ve seen job postings for the Census 2010 program, so it seems that all the work we did together is paying off for them 🙂
